Why the smoldering phase matters
Some ignitions develop through a period of slow combustion before sustained flaming. Environmental measurements may provide signals during this stage, but the detectable signature depends on the fuel, weather and proximity of the sensor.
Measure more than one variable
Temperature and humidity describe environmental conditions. Gas and pressure measurements add context. Comparing several variables and their evolution helps teams interpret a change rather than treating one reading as a complete answer.
Build a reliable data path
A node must communicate its observations through the network to the platform. Radio coverage and monitoring coverage need separate assessment. Connectivity gaps can affect when information reaches the team.
Define detection and notification separately
Detection time is the interval needed to identify an event under defined conditions. Notification latency is the time to deliver an alert once generated. Evaluate both in the pilot, together with false alarms and missed events.
Connect warning to response
Agree who receives an alert, how it is verified, and when it is escalated. Early warning is most useful when the organisation has a clear and exercised response procedure.
