DEPLOYMENT GUIDE

A wildfire monitoring pilot checklist

A pilot should answer a defined operational question. Use this checklist to prepare a project that produces evidence for a deployment decision.

Discuss a wildfire monitoring pilot

Scope and ownership

Define the monitored area, priority assets, timeline and project owner. Agree what the pilot can establish and which questions require longer seasonal observation.

Installation and connectivity

Review land access, permissions, mounting locations, terrain and communication paths. Document the installed coordinates and confirm each node reports as expected.

Data and evaluation

Agree criteria for data completeness, network availability, environmental baselines and notification latency. Record the circumstances of alerts and define how false alarms and missed events will be assessed.

Operational exercise

Confirm recipients and escalation paths. Run a notification exercise without presenting it as a real emergency. Document acknowledgement and the team's verification process.

Decision and next steps

Review performance against the agreed criteria, record limitations and estimate the effort needed for a larger deployment. Retain the results so future phases can be compared.

From measurements to a response

  1. 1. Sensor nodes

Environmental measurements and site coordinates provide context for an emerging anomaly.

  2. 2. Gateway and network

Radio links carry observations to the monitoring platform. Check connectivity separately from detection coverage.

  3. 3. Platform and response team

Review the location and trends, route the notification and follow the agreed verification procedure.

What to record during a pilot

Agree acceptance criteria before installation. This evaluation framework describes what to measure; it does not present completed field-test results.

Pilot evaluation record
MeasureEvidence to retain
Data completenessExpected and received reports, missing intervals and outage causes.
Radio connectivityNode coordinates, gateway location, terrain and link observations.
Alert deliveryGeneration, delivery and acknowledgement timestamps for an agreed test notification.
Detection evaluationDefined event conditions, reference observations, false alerts and missed events.
Operational readinessResponsible recipients, escalation contacts, verification steps and exercise findings.
